Background: I personally believe in the strict wording of the 2nd amendment to our Constitution. The PEOPLE have the right to keep and bear arms. We SHOULD have the right to protect ourselves, families, homes and others from bad guys and believe me, there are MANY more bad guys out there than the Govt. wants you to know about. I was the USCG representative to the Western States Intelligence Network for 2 years, it sure was an eye opener! Once a month reps from the Oregon State Police, the county sheriffs, city police, DEA, INS, FBI and me got together to exchange info on all the stuff going on. After just a couple meetings I payed a visit to the local sheriffs office to procure a concealed weapons carry permit.
I was raised by a retired Marine and life long outdoorsman. I learned to hunt, fish and trap. I have always shot rifles, pistols and shotguns very well and we always had many in the house. We were raised to respect firearms and handle them properly. We were not allowed to have BB guns, if we were going to shoot we would shoot a "proper" rifle so we started out with .22 bolt action rifles and worked our way up from there. My last centerfire rifle was a BSA Monarch in 7mm Rem Magnum. They are out of production due to England's strict firearms control laws. It shot VERY well, I could regularly hit a beer can at 400 yards with a 4X scope. I sold that rifle over 35 years ago and have not owned a centerfire rifle since, I have owned a couple of shotguns and several handguns since then.
